A college degree doesn’t necessarily spell job security, or even a high salary, anymore. Plenty of people graduate with a piece of paper, and find that hundreds of other young adults with that same piece of paper are competing for limited jobs. What’s worse is that their college education may have given them lots of information, but no actual job skills. Studying at a vocational school lets you choose from among many in-demand jobs, and gives you the skills and hands-on experience to land a job right away.
Technical schools generally offer two-year programs which prepare you for a specific career path. Program options at most technical colleges include culinary arts, hospitality management, massage therapy, medical technician, dental assistant, graphic design and cosmetology, among many others.
One of the most popular options to study is Information Technology. A computer technical school can prepare you for a wide range of computer-related jobs. This could be anything from managing a corporate computer network to designing websites. Business colleges also tend to offer a lot of computer-related programs, since so much business these days is conducted electronically.
Another smart option is to learn a skilled trade. This refers to occupations such are plumbing, carpentry, welding, locksmithing and landscaping – any highly skilled work you do with your hands. Skilled tradespeople are in high demand and can find work just about anywhere.
Advances in technology have affected the trades, too, and most trades now require more technical knowledge than ever. Think about how complicated cars are now, with all their electronic components, than they were 40 years ago. It used to be that you could learn everything from an on the job apprenticeship, but more and more you’ll need some formal schooling as well.
Trade schools will give you the solid foundation of technical knowledge you need, and give you lots of practice, as well. For example, an automotive technical school will include classroom components learning the science and engineering that goes into modern cars, but you will still spend most of your time in the shop actually getting your hands dirty.
