Take care of yourself

“If you don’t have your health, you don’t have anything.” We’ve heard that phrase before, and it’s absolutely true. If you don’t take care of yourself, all the money in the world won’t help you. Well, maybe that money could go towards getting the best possible health care, but it’s not about buying or drugging your way out of bad health – it’s about not getting to that state in the first place.

A Few Basics

One way to help ensure that you stay healthy is to have adequate health insurance. Health insurance will cover your expenses in the event you get sick, so you can get better faster. It is sometimes also known as Medicare, and it can come from either a private company or it can be social health insurance, funded by the government. Of course, eating well and getting regular exercise will go a long way toward keeping your body strong.

Generally speaking, there isn’t a huge difference between men’s health and women’s health, except with certain health conditions that can only happen to a particular sex. No woman is about to come down with testicular cancer, for example. Sexual health is also a big concern, and while condoms can help the prevent sexually transmitted diseases from spreading, they aren’t 100 percent effective.

Though some conditions can’t be prevented because of genetics or old age, there is medical help available for a wide range of diseases. Here are three major conditions and a little health and care information on what you can do to deal with them.

Diabetes

Diabetes is a disorder in which the body can’t process insulin. There is Type 1 diabetes and Type 2 diabetes. Both types have some common symptoms, like increased thirst, increased urination, blurry vision, fatigue and bladder infections. Type 1 diabetes is treated with insulin injections. Type 2 is treated by watching your blood sugar level to keep it in the right range. You need to significantly reduce high-fat foods as well as those high in sugar. Eat regularly, and consume more high-fiber foods and complex carbohydrates.

Psoriasis

Psoriasis is a skin condition characterized by red and silver-white patches of scales. It’s usually mild but can be severe. There are many types of psoriasis: plaque, flexural, guttate, pustular and erythrodermic. Psoriasis isn’t curable, but it can be controlled with topical creams. Other forms of treatment may be more effective, but they can be more toxic. Treatments also don’t necessarily work the same for every person, so it can be tricky to manage the condition.

Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder where the sleeper stops breathing for a few seconds many times during the night. This can happen up to hundreds of times in an evening, and is the result of soft tissue collapse in the throat, restricting airflow. This causes the sleeper to wake up or take a big breath in a gasp. Loud snoring is a symptom, and it can lead to restless sleep and fatigue the next day. There are three types of sleep apnea: obstructive, central and mixed. To treat sleep apnea, start by keeping a healthy weight and don’t sleep on your back. You can also get a dental device to keep the airway open while you sleep. Implants and surgery are other options.
